El presente artículo estudia el fenómeno de la lectura en la Europa del siglo XVIII, a partir del caso del Orinoco ilustrado (1741-1745), del jesuita español José Gumilla. Se trata de una primera contribución al estudio de la recepción y la circulación de esta obra, a través de las múltiples lecturas que de Gumilla hicieron sus contemporáneos en España, Francia y los Países Bajos. El objetivo es poner esta obra en el contexto de su época, tanto desde el punto de vista literario como de la historia de las ideas, y subrayar cómo la ambigüedad de la producción y la recepción del libro tienen mucho que ver con el proceso histórico de la Ilustración, tan complejo como la obra misma.

This article studies the reading process phenomenon during the European Enlightenment through the case study of El Orinoco ilustrado (1741-1745), written by José Gumilla, a Jesuit from the Kingdom of New Granada. It is the first contribution to the study of reception and circulation of the work of this Spanish missionary by means of the multiple interpretations of contemporary readers in Spain, France and the Netherlands. The main objective of this paper is to understand the book in the context of its time, from a literary point of view as well as from the standpoint of history of ideas. It also underlines how the ambiguity of the reception process, definitely as ambiguous as the work itself, is related to the historical progress of the Enlightenment.
