  • Resumen
    • AfD’s electoral victories in Saxe and Brandenburg during the September 2019 regional elections – which confirm its strong roots in Eastern Landers – worry. It’s not that West Germany does not know an electoral push of this xenophobic, reactionary and nationalist party too, it does, but in a lower extent. However, the Green party performs much better there than in Eastern Landers, as seen during the May 2019 European elections. As for the two big parties – CDU/CSU and SPD – their results drop both in the West and the East.

This strong push of the AfD is strongly connected to the 2015 migration crisis, but it can also be understood as the uneasiness felt by a population that sees itself as second-tier citizens. If the economic performance of the reunification is indiscutable, what about the consciousness of belonging to one and only nation ? The nazi past and the Second World War are not experienced in the same way from one side of the Wall to the other and this determines the way they think about the nation and consider their role as a European power.
