Working with engineers at the University of Washington in Seattle, Anna Coutsoudis of the University of KwaZulu Natal in Durban South Africa, and her colleagues at the Nelson Mandela School of Medicine have come up with a much more affordable pasteurization solution. Rather than pasteurizing high volumes of milk at a time, their system pasteurizes just three bottles of breast milk in 20 minutes, which is more appropriate for small-scale milk banks at peripheral health care facilities. All in, the system only costs $800, as delegates will hear at the South African AIDS Conference in Durban in June 2013.
