Some philosophical concepts by Martin Buber are analyzed. For the philosopher, the individual being appears when contrasted with other individual beings, while the person appears by entering into relation with other persons, in the binomial You-I. Personal reciprocity consists in the encounter between two human beings that verify one another. Buber describes a ‘normative limitation’ as the problem that arises when the situation does not allow full reciprocity between two persons and the relationship is not fully mutual, as they are at inequality. In the patient diagnosed with brain death, the I-You relation does exist, since the patient has been previously recognized as one other, even though a normative limitation appears in which there exists no full reciprocity.
