Visiones agrarias valdenses en Colonia durante la segunda presidencia de J. Batlle y Ordóñez (1911-1915). El caso de “La Unión Valdense”

    El departamento de Colonia, en el último cuarto del siglo XIX, asistió al establecimiento de numerosas colonias agrícolas de inmigrantes. Muchas de las mismas fueron fundadas por la comunidad valdense.La zona de Colonia, a diferencia del resto del país, desarrolló desde esa época la agricultura, la agroindustria y la agropecuaria (integrando agricultura y ganadería, según la concepción agraria del primer batllismo). Los valdenses, junto a los colonos suizos, fueron actores de avanzada en este proceso. A comienzos del siglo XX conformaban una clase media rural próspera e innovadora, que fue tomada como modelo para los planes de reforma rural de Batlle y Ordóñez. Proponemos en este trabajo, por lo tanto, explorar las visiones que sobre el quehacer agrario tuvieron los valdenses en los primeros años del siglo XX, más específicamente, durante la segunda presidencia de José Batlle y Ordóñez (1911-1915).

    The department of Colonia, in the last quarter of the 19th century, assisted in the establishment of numerous agricultural colonies of immigrants. Many of the same were founded by the Waldensian community. The area of Colonia, unlike the rest of the country, developed from that time agriculture, agro-industry and agriculture (integrating agriculture and livestock, according to the agrarian conception of the first Batllismo). The Waldensians, along with the Swiss settlers, were leading actors in this process. At the beginning of the 20th century, they formed a prosperous and innovative rural middle class, which was taken as a model for the rural reform plans of Batlle and Ordóñez. We propose in this work, therefore, to explore the visions that the Waldensians had about the agrarian activity in the first years of the XX century, more specifically, during the second presidency of José Batlle y Ordóñez (19111915)
