    The War of the Triple Alliance against Paraguay, in its totality, was for a long time ill-explained, with historiographical interpretations deficient or dubious. Countless events in that conflict still await further analysis. In this brief article we must understand, in the light of the documentation we have obtained, the effective participation of General David Canabarro, Liberal political chief and almost a military unanimity in Rio Grande do Sul, for the unlikely success of the Paraguayan invasion of the southern province in June of 1865. We sought to understand how a zone with a great history of war, which had thousands of soldiers and officers of the National Guard, was handed over to the invading army without any resistance.     A Guerra da Tríplice Aliança contra o Paraguai, em sua totalidade, esteve por muito tempo mal explicada, com interpretações historiográficas deficientes ou de caráter duvidoso. Inúmeros acontecimentos daquele conflito ainda esperam por melhores análises. Nesse breve artigo bucamos compreender, a luz da documentação que conseguimos, qual a participação efetiva do general David Canabarro, chefe político Liberal e quase uma unanimidade militar no Rio Grande do Sul, para o improvável sucesso da invasão dos paraguaios à província sulina, em junho de 1865. Buscamos entender como uma zona com grande histórico belicista, que contava com milhares de soldados e oficiais da Guarda Nacional foi entregue ao exército invasor, sem a menor resistência. David Canabarro, Comandante Superior da Fronteira, foi extremamente inerte.
