Presidenta de la Cámara durante trece años, de 1979 a 1992, la primera mujer a la que se le ha solicitado la tarea de formar gobierno, aunque solo fuera de modo exploratorio, en 1987; la primera mujer comunista nominada a la presidencia de la República en 1992, en fin, una cantidad de responsabilidades, de protagonista que muy pocos hombres han tenido en la historia de Italia. El hecho es que después de la muerte de su compañero en 1964, Nilde Iotti tomó las riendas, entregó el resto de su vida a demostrar que los cargos que había tenido, hasta ese momento, no los había tenido por los favoritismos del secretario del Partido Comunista Italiano, sino porque los merecía, porque era una persona capaz, una gran estudiosa y también tenía mano de seda para afrontar las cuestiones políticas.
