The paper is an analysis of Notatki włoskie. Przezrocza(Italian notes. Slides), the only work that the Polish writer Maria Kuncewiczowa dedicated to Italy. The author describes the hybrid nature of the book that must be understood in the context of the so-called “literature of the fact” that characterized the Polish prose of the last two decades of socialism. The book of the Polish writer reveals the characteristics of an essay, a diary, a narrative, and a literary report. For these reasons it can be classified into the genre silva rerum. The two historical episodes recalled in detail (the abduction and killing of the politician Aldo Moro and the election of Karol Wojtyła as Pope) are an occasion for Kuncewiczowa to undertake a lucid analysis of Italian reality between the seventies and the eighties. Italian notes contain at the same time a veiled but resolute writer’s judgment about the dramatic Polish situation in the martial law period. The issues perceptively treated in the book, terrorism and state violence, demonstrate their relevance today more than thirty years after the publication. In the final part of the paper, the author reflects on the reasons for marginalization of Maria Kuncewiczowa in Polish literature and the consequent lack of foreign knowledge of the author recalled only for The Stranger, her famous pre-war novel

Il presente contributo è dedicato a Notatki włoskie. Przezrocza (Appunti italiani. Istantanee), l’unica opera che la scrittrice polacca Maria Kuncewiczowa dedicò all’Italia. Dopo la sua attribuzione al genere della silva rerum, se ne descrive la natura ibrida tra saggio, diario, racconto, offrendo una sua precisa collocazione nel contesto della cosiddetta “letteratura del fatto”. I due episodi storici rievocati dettagliatamente nel libro (il rapimento e l’uccisione di Aldo Moro e l’elezione di Karol Wojtyła a papa) sono per Kuncewiczowa lo spunto di una lucida analisi della realtà italiana a cavallo tra gli anni Settanta e Ottanta, ma anche l’occasione per formulare un giudizio, velato ma categorico, sulla drammatica situazione polacca negli anni dello Stato di guerra. I problemi trattati dal libro, il terrorismo e la violenza dello stato, testimoniano la sua grande attualità a più di trent’anni dalla sua pubblicazione. Nella parte finale del contributo si riflette sui motivi della marginalizzazione di Maria Kuncewiczowa nella letteratura polacca e sulla scarsa conoscenza all’estero di un’autrice ricordata solo per un suo fortunato romanzo prebellico.
