Son muchas las historias que se han escrito sobre los espíritus de los muertos que atormentan a los vivos. En todas ellas, los fantasmas representan, literal o metafóricamente, algo del pasado que ha quedado sin cerrar o un conflicto que no ha sido resuelto. En este artículo se analizará cómo la figura del fantasma que se manifiesta alterando el orden de la vida y la muerte, acaba convirtiéndose en un mito moderno, especialmente a partir de los relatos de M. R. James (1862-1936), y cómo pasa a simbolizar muchos de los miedos y conflictos del siglo XX, una época en que lo gótico adopta un claro carácter subversivo.

Many are the stories written about spirits of the dead tormenting the living. In all of them the ghost represents, literally or metaphorically, something of the past that remains unfinished, a conflict that has not been solved yet. This paper will analyze how the figure of the ghost, which alters the order of life and death, becomes a modern myth, especially since M. R. James's tales. This study will also show how the ghost, in the end, symbolizes many of the fears and conflicts of the twentieth century-a period when the Gothic acquires a clear subversive character.
