"Now you see me", you perv!: female subversion of biblical myths in Marina Warner's short stories

    Uno de los rasgos más sobresalientes de las novelas y romances femeninos postmodernos es la revisión y la deconstrucción de ideologías y conceptos por lo general bien establecidos, especialmente los que reflejan los mitos antiguos. Una multitud de diferentes estrategias se adoptan en este proceso, la mayoría utilizando estos textos antiguos como punto de partida para versiones renovadas y significados generalmente descuidados. En este artículo se muestra cómo la novelista contemporánea inglesa Marina Warner utiliza métodos específicos en su reescritura de mitos bíblicos como los del Génesis, y Susana y los viejos, en el libro apócrifo de Daniel. Mi interés se centra en la colección de historias cortas de Wamer titulada “The Mermaids in The Basement”, específicamente los cuentos "full Fathom Five" y "Now You See Me". Esto me permitirá explorar las técnicas utilizadas en la deconstrucción de los mitos. De hecho, Warner subvierte las convenciones míticas con el fin de hacer coincidir sus versiones de los mitos con un modelo más apropiado para su nuevo contenido y estructura. La primera parte de este artículo tendrá como objetivo identificar los mitos bíblicos adaptados por Marina Warner y demostrar las diferentes técnicas utilizadas para volver escribirlos, como la reapropiación del texto original por una narradora en primera persona y la modernización de valores, hechos y personas antiguos. La segunda parte interrogará los objetivos más importantes de la estrategia de Warner, especialmente la destrucción de la autoridad religiosa y patriarcal de los mitos bíblicos y la recuperación por parte del discurso feminista de las voces de feministas postmodernas que siempre han sido silenciadas. La teoría de la mirada, el psicoanálisis y el feminismo impregnan este artículo y darán apoyo al análisis teórico.

    One of the most salient features of women's post-modern novels and short storic is the revision and deconstruction of previously well-established ideologies and concepts, especially those contained within ancient myths. A multitude of different strategies are adopted in the process, most of these making use of those older texts as a starting point to renewed versions and previously overlooked meanings. This paper reveals how Marina Warner. a contemporary English novelist, resorts to specific methods in her rewrítings of such bíblical myths as contained in Genesis and "Susannah and the Elders” in the apocryphal Book of Daniel. I will focus on Warner's collection of short stories. The Mermaids in the Basement” namely on “Full Fathom Five" and "Now You See Me", to explore the fictional techniques of myth deconstruction. Indeed, Warner subverts mythical conventions in order to make her refurbished myths fit into a pattern that is more appropriate to their new structure and content. The first part of this paper aims to identify the biblical myths rewritten by Marina Warner and to show the different reworking process used, namely the re-appropriation of the original text by a female first-person narrator and the modernization of ancient settings, events and characters. The second part will investigate the most important purposes of Warner's strategy, especially the destruction of the religious and patríarchal authority of biblical myths and the retrieval of the voices of the traditionally silenced within postmodern feminist fiction. The theories of the gaze, psychoanalysis and feminism will permeate the paper and support the analysis of both painting and short stories.
