    Tanto Italo Calvino en su colección de ensayos "Lezioni americane" como J.M. Coetzee en su "novela" Elizabeth Costello tratan el tema de la actividad del escritor, y sobre todo de los valores poéticos y su naturaleza cambiante, empleando los mitos antiguos como narrativas ejemplares que sirven para ilustrar su argumento. Sin embargo, en Elizabeth Costello, Coetzee va más allá de la perspectiva antropológica y funcional de Calvino sobre el mito (narrativas emblemáticas que sirven para alimentar la imaginación poética), y construye una "novela" metaficcional en la que los mitos se enredan y mezclan con cuestiones de autoría, forma y estructura narrativas, género, cultura popular, intertextualidad y formatos textuales. Al aludir al mito en todos los niveles de esta novela episódica, multiforme y metaficcional, Coetzee subvierte la noción misma de mito, y establece que cualquier forma de narrativa es potencialmente creadora de mitos.

    Both ltalo Calvino in his collection of essays Lezioni americane, and J.M. Coetzee in his "novel" Elizabeth Costello address the question of the writer's activity, and particularly poetic values and their changing nature, by using ancient myths as exemplary narratives with which to illustrate their arguments. In Elizabeth Costello, however, Coetzee moves from Calvino's earlier anthropological and functional view of myth (emblematic narratives which serve to fuel the poetic imagination), and constructs a metafictional "novel" where the narrative of myth is intertwined with issues of authorship, narrative form and structure, genre. popular culture, intertextuality and textual artefacts. lt is by referencing ancient myths in all the levels of his episodic, multiform and metafictional novel that Coetzee subverts thc very notion of myth itself, and establishes ali forms of narrative as potential myth-makers.
