    André Gide fue uno de los intelectuales franceses que al comienzo del siglo XX intentó hacer una aproximación completamente novedosa al mito griego. Un ejemplo de su trabajo es “Thésée”, una novela en la que prácticamente desmitifica la antigua leyenda, dándole una visión diferente al héroe y a los hechos, para refutar el modo en el cual el mito era percibido en la Antigüedad y generalmente por sus contemporáneos. En su novela el protagonista se presenta como una figura solitaria, como un ser humano corriente, sin su aura de gloria. Lo novedoso en la novela no es solo la modernización del mito, sino principalmente su racionalización. El punto de vista de Gide puede considerarse como irónico, usando el cinismo y el pragmatismo a lo largo de toda la novela, con el fin de resaltar la naturaleza humana del héroe. Partiendo de sus firmes convicciones filosóficas, Gide se apropia del mito para crear no solo arte, sino una nueva mitología.

    André Gide was among the French intellectuals who, in the beginning of the twentieth century. attempted a completely new approach lo thc Greek myth. A typical example of his work is “Thésée”, a novel where he practically de-mystifies the ancient legend in order to project a different view of the hero and his deeds, to contest the ways in which the myth itself was perceived by the ancients and mostly by his contemporaries. In his work the main character stands before us alone, as a plain human being. deprived of his aura and glory; what is at stake here, though, is not so much the modernization of the myth but rather, its rationalization. For Gide starts from a point of view that can be descríbed at least as ironic- using cynicism and pragmatism throughout his novel-only to exalt the hero's human nature. Based on his firm philosophical beliefs. Gide appropriated a myth in order to create not just art but also a new mythology.
