En este artículo se hace un acercamiento a la cultura, los valores estéticos y el pensamientotras la creación musical en el mundo árabe, centrándose en el concepto del Tarab. La palabra“Tarab” es usada en el árabe para describir los efectos emocionales producidos por la música,pero el término también se asocia a una forma tradicional de música árabe —un viejo repertoriomusical anterior a la Primera Guerra Mundial muy característico de países como Egipto y la costaeste del Mediterráneo (Siria, Líbano y Palestina)— y la evocación emocional que ella produce.

An approach to the culture and aesthetic values behind musical creation in the Arab world,focusing on the concept of Tarab. There is no word in any Western language that renders thisterm, nor is there any similar concept in Western aesthetics. The word “Tarab” is used in Arabicto describe the emotional effects of music. The term is also associated with a form oftraditional Arabic music that previously to the First World War was played in the EasternMediterranean region and is directly linked to the evocative emotions it elicits.
