Resumen de El Brexit y el futuro de la Unión Europea

El 10 de abril de 2019 el Consejo Europeo aprobó la Decisión de otorgar una nueva prórroga para permitir la ratificación del Acuerdo de Retirada de la Unión Europea (UE) por parte del Reino Unido. En este artículo se revisan las causas y consecuencias de esta Decisión, particularmente para el Reino Unido, donde la presión política actual podría derivar en una convocatoria a nuevas elecciones generales y la precipitación de un Brexit sin acuerdo. Adicionalmente, se analizan los escenarios que podrán presentarse una vez vencido el plazo de prórroga otorgado, para terminar con una reflexión sobre la lección y los retos a futuro que surgen del Brexit para los Estados Miembros de la UE.

On April 10, 2019, the European Council approved the decision to grant a new extension to allow the ratification of the European Union (EU) Withdrawal Agreement by the United Kingdom. This article reviews the causes and consequences of this Decision, particularly for the United Kingdom, where the current political pressure could result in a call for new general elections and the precipitation of a Brexit without an agreement. In addition, the article analysed the scenarios that may be presented after the expiration of the granted extension term, to end with a reflection on the lesson and the future challenges that arise from the Brexit for the EU Member States.
