    The numerous studies of the love for India entertained by the main actors of German romanticism have rarely developed the tension between their search for an Urreligion and an Ursprache, through philology and linguistics applied to the religious texts of South Asia, and that for an Ursymbolik, through the comparative study of mythologies and of the representations of divinities other than those in Greek art. If the Indo-European filiation (before it was named) managed to reconfigure the religious themes, it had difficulties articulating a questioning of Greece’s plastic and aesthetic autonomy. This paper focuses on studying this phenomenon through the dialogue between Aloys Schreiber, defender of classicism, and the Indophile Joseph Görres regarding the « Indo-European » nature of the works of the German artist Philipp Otto Runge

    Les nombreuses études consacrées à l’engouement pour l’Inde des acteurs du romantisme allemand ont rarement relevé la tension entre leur recherche d’une Urreligion et d’une Ursprache, par la méthode philologique et bientôt linguistique appliquée aux textes religieux d’Asie du Sud, et celle d’une Ursymbolik, par le comparatisme des mythologies et des représentations de divinités alternatives à l’art grec. Si la filiation indo-européenne (avant la lettre) parvient à reconfigurer le religieux, elle peine à s’articuler à la remise en cause de l’autonomie plastique de la Grèce. La contribution se propose d’examiner ce phénomène à travers le dialogue qui s’est noué entre le défenseur du classicisme Aloys Schreiber et l’indophile Joseph Görres au sujet du caractère « indo-européen » des oeuvres de l’artiste allemand Philipp Otto Runge
