The article studies urban tree planting in the Latin American subcontinent, emphasizing in two Colombian cities: Bogota and Medellin. Three stages were established for the analysis corresponding to three different manifestations of the Latin American urban form: i) the colonial city; ii) the republican city; and iii) the proto-modern city. The origins and evolution of tree planting in Latin America are examined from secondary sources, taking into account the first species planted, the species that were planted in a massive way, the public spaces in which they were planted, and the successes and deficiencies of the first urban tree plantings. Although this work is not intended to be exhaustive, it is a good approximation to urban arboriculture processes in the studied areas and during the established time window —that is, from the founding of the first cities in the New World until the mid-1950s— and also, it shows the excessive predominance of introduced species.
