El lugar de Josep Fontana y de su obra en la historia de la historiografía vendrá determinado principalmente por su dimensión, presencia, e infl uencia profesional a lo largo de más de medio siglo; con el tiempo ocupará en ella un espacio tan consistente como signifi cativo. Esta intervención recuerda y analiza sus tres principales dedicaciones profesionales, docente y maestro, historiador e investigador de gran altura, editor de enorme infl uencia y repercusión, que desempeñó con rigor, esfuerzo y pasión, y por las que será recordado y resistirá muy bien el fi ltro del paso del tiempo, y sostiene que sus compromisos ciudadanos y políticos con su presente, como en el caso de otros grandes historiadores, irán teniendo una importancia progresivamente menor a la hora de valorar su obra.

The place of Josep Fontana and his work in the history of historiography shall be determined mainly by its dimension, presence and professional infl uence for over more than half a century; it will eventually fi ll a space of its own which will be as consistent as it is signifi cant. This intervention recalls and analyzes the three main professional occupations that he carried out with rigor, effort and passion and for which he will be remembered and will stand the test of time perfectly:
a teacher and a master, a highly prestigious historian and a researcher of recognized international standing and an editor of enormous infl uence and impact. It also maintains that his civic and political commitment to his present, as it is the case with other great historians, will gradually become less important when evaluating his work.
