Resumen de Brexit Linkage in Trade Negotiation: A Strategy for Rejecting the European Union – East African Community Economic Partnership Agreement?
The Brexit vote meant that the United Kingdom could exit the European single market and create its own trade policy. This has become a strong concern for some African countries who were negotiating to sign a reciprocal trade deal with the EU. In the case of the East African Community (EAC), some partner states refused to sign the regional EU-EAC EPA citing the problem of uncertainty due to Brexit. To address this issue, the question raised here is: how did Brexit linkage in trade negotiation increase the possibility of not achieving an EAC regional EPA deal? The article uses issue linkage bargaining strategy to show how Brexit provided a new opportunity for some countries to include additional negotiation demands, thus leading to refusals to sign the EU’s trade deal
