    Hasta cierto punto, hoy es redundante decir que vivimos en un momento de cambio, ya que es una noción aceptada en los campos más diversos. Ya sea en el ámbito político, económico, religioso, estatal o científico, todos en estos campos están de acuerdo con la importancia del momento actual. Sin embargo, los parámetros de su interpretación aún no se han definido. Por lo tanto, hay un sentimiento común de que algo "está sucediendo", pero no hay certeza ni acuerdo sobre cómo interpretarlo. Esta perplejidad se ve aumentada por los grandes grados de organización y aplicaciones tecnológicas desarrolladas recientemente que colocan a la sociedad hacia el final de un siglo en una zona de riesgos sociales y ecológicos insospechados. Esto presenta dos preguntas. ¿Cuáles son los principios conceptuales sobre los cuales estos cambios son percibidos y articulados? Y, si las apreciaciones teóricas prevalecientes son aplicables al tipo de sociedad que surge. Explorar estos temas es uno de los principales desafíos de la teoría sociológica en el siglo XXI.

    To a certain point, today it is redundant to say that we live in a time of change, for it is an accepted notion in the most diverse fields. Whether the political, economic, religious, state or scientific arenas, everyone in these fields agrees on the importance of the current moment. However, the parameters of its interpretation have yet to be defined. Thus, there is a common feeling that something “is happening”, yet there are no certainty and agreement as to how to interpret it. This perplexity is increased by the large degrees of organization and technological applications developed recently that place society towards the end of a century in a zone of unsuspected social and ecological risks. This presents two questions. What are the conceptual principles upon which these changes are being perceived and articulated? And, whether the prevailing theoretical appreciations are applicable to the type of society arising. Exploring these issues is one of the cardinal challenges of sociological theory in the XXI Century.
