    Una de las principales lagunas de la geografía árabe clásica es la región insular entre India y China, zona constantemente navegada por barcos árabes, pero escasamente reconocida. En el presente trabajo planteamos el problema histórico del mundo insular del Sudeste asiático, y la respuesta ofrecida por la geografía de Ibn Sa‘īd al- Magribī, miembro de la ilustre familia de los Banū Sa‛īd de Alcalá la Real (Jaén). Tratamos de describir cómo Ibn Sa‘īd, asumiendo el peso de la tradición, trató de dar una imagen coherente e histórica al islario infinito heredado de al-Idrīsī, aportando nuevos datos y nuevos razonamientos sobre la configuración de la región. Se atiende con mayor detalle el caso particular de al-Māyṭ.

    One of the main knowledge gaps in classical Arab geography concerns the sea area between India and China, which, though regularly sailed by Arabian ships, had scarcely been surveyed hitherto. In the present work we raise the historical problem of the insular world of Southeast Asia and the answer offered in the geographical work of Ibn Sa‘īd al-Magribī, an important member of the reputed Banū Sa‘īd family from Alcalá la Real (Jaén). We describe how Ibn Sa‘īd, accepted the weight of tradition, but tried to depict al-Idrīsī’s model of never-ceasing islands in a coherent and historical manner, providing new data and new reasoning about the conformation of the region. We focus on the specific case of al-Māyṭ.
