In 8th and 9th centuries, Rapitas and almonastirs of the Upper Border of al-Andalus have been part of the organization of the boundary territory that is articulated by the Ebro Valley and the pre- Pyrenees.
The Cordovan Emirs are stimulating this type of settlements with the purpose of promote Islamization of that territory, consolidate its power and definitely give cohesion in the taghr in front of Christian counties that are being created in the Pyrenees. Rapitas initial function were to received Muslim priers for doing spiritual stages and defend the border. In 10th century, rapitas and almonastirs change its concept to spirituality.
The settlement called ‘la Rapita’ is the case of study for the architectural elements preserved, highlighting the big tower of ashlars, a type of defensive structures quite different of other examples that were being investigated in the Iberian peninsula.
