  • Quantum clones are making a noise, and banks and governments better listen if they don't want to be hacked. Karol Bartkiewicz of Palacky University in Olomouc, Czech Republic, and colleagues have discovered that a hacker can hide in this noise. The attack relies on a device called a quantum cloner, which creates copies of the photons. Although the clones aren't perfect, they are good enough to keep the error rate low. The attacker then keeps one copy for themselves and sends the other to the original recipient. Once the transmission is complete, the hacker can decrypt the message. Bartkiewicz's team carried out an attack in the lab and intercepted the key while introducing an error rate of around 18.5%, meaning that anyone not paying close attention to noise on their quantum line could be duped.
