  • Resumen
    • Science teachers know the deep satisfaction of engaging students in science activities and seeing their excitement when a new idea suddenly makes sense. Providing opportunities to foster such student delight is one way to recruit talented undergraduate physics majors into the teaching profession.

Our program of guided pre-professional classroom experiences has increased interest in teaching among the participants. In a supportive community of undergraduates and college physics faculty members, this program helps undergraduate physics majors experience the satisfaction of active inquiry teaching. Participants design and build physics demonstrations and deliver them in local high school classrooms. Assessment results show that participation in the program increases interest in teaching. In addition, the community formed through this program supports the physics majors who are interested in teaching and helps with retention of these pre-service physics teachers; this community includes physics majors and physics and education professors
