Seven families of languages across the Eurasian continent, containing tongues as diverse as modern Inuit, Tamil, Japanese, Greek and Hungarian, evolved from a single language that existed around the time of the last ice age. That's the conclusion of research that has traced linguistics thousands of years deeper into the past than was previously thought possible. The evolution of language is thought to have much in common with biological evolution. Scientists look for similarities between languages that hint at a common ancestor.
