    Tras el Concilio de Trento se difundió una literatura destinada al clero que tenía como finalidad ponderar la dignidad y excelencia del estado eclesiástico, al tiempo que se reivindicaba su papel director dentro de la sociedad, por lo que se estaba reafirmando el carácter privilegiado del estamento. Pero, además, se multiplicaron las obras de carácter biográfico que, a través del ensalzamiento de prelados ejemplares, incidían en estos mismos argumentos. Lo interesante es que, a la hora de elaborar las vidas de estos clérigos, en numerosas ocasiones se aludía a los orígenes nobiliarios de sus familias. Por tanto, a través del análisis de varios de estos tratados de los siglos XVII, lo que se pretende investigar el peso y la influencia del ideal nobiliario y tratar de responder a diferentes cuestiones: ¿Por qué un estamento privilegiado, como era el clero, había de recurrir al otro, la nobleza, para apuntalar su posición social preeminente? ¿Es que no se podía concebir la dignidad sin la nobleza? ¿Pudo existir un sentimiento de inferioridad del clero frente a la nobleza?

    After the Council of Trent a literature for the clergy appeared. Its purpose was to ponder the dignity and excellence of the ecclesiastical state. At the same time his leading role within society was vindicated; in this way, the privileged character of the estate was reaffirmed. At this time, the publication of biographies of exemplary prelates increased greatly. The interesting thing is that most of the biographies explained in its first pages the nobiliary origins of the bishops. Therefore, through the analysis of several of these treaties of the Seventeenth Century, it is intended to investigate the weight and influence of the nobility ideal. This paper tries to answer different questions: Why did a privileged class, such as the clergy, have to resort to the other, the nobility, to shore up their pre-eminent social position? Could dignity be conceived without the nobility? Was there a feeling of inferiority of the clergy against the nobility?
