  Schon Robert Koldewey stellte sich die Frage nach den Ursachen für die besondere Grundrissgestalt des Tempels mit seinen auf Fronten und Seiten leicht unterschiedlichen Normaljochen und vor allem der komplizierten Eckkontraktion und vermutete Hinweise darauf im Gebälk. Bei der neuen genauen Aufnahme des Oberbaues im M 1:25 fielen zunächst erhebliche Unstimmigkeiten in der Zuordnung der gliedernden Bestandteile des Gebälks – Regulae, Triglyphen und Metopen, Mutuli – ins Auge, zusammen mit deutlichen Spuren von Überarbeitungen an vielen Baugliedern, vor allem den Architraven. Dabei ist es ohne eine erneute Überprüfung am Bau nicht auszumachen, ob die Bauteile von einem immer klarer erkannten Vorgängerbau am selben Platz stammen oder nach einem ersten Entwurf dimensioniert waren. Bei der Annahme der letzteren Hypothese ergäben sich Hinweise auf einen Entwurfsvorgang in zwei Schritten, so wie er zuletzt für den Zeustempel in Olympia erwiesen worden ist. Danach wäre ein erstes Schema der Säulenstellung mit allseits gleichem Normaljoch und einfacher Eckkontraktion in einem zweiten Schritt durch viele kleine Abstimmungen in der Dimensionierung der einzelnen Bauglieder abgeändert worden, um in Übereinstimmung mit dem mutmaßlichen Vorgängerbau harmonische Proportionen des dreidimensionalen Gesamtbaukörpers zu erreichen.

  Robert Koldewey, already, questioned the reasons of the special shape of the temple plan with its slightly different column bays on front and sides and with the complicated angle contractions, and he supposed to find some answers in the entablature. During the new exact documentation of the upper parts of the temple in sc. 1:25, however, there were noticed considerable gaps in the coordination of the structuring elements of the entablature – regulae, triglyphs and metopes, mutuli - , together with evident traces of reworking on many elements, especially on the architraves. Before carrying out a new review on the moment itself it remains difficult to establish, if these elements are readapted from a predecessor on the same spot or if they had been dimensioned after a first project of the actual building. Following this latter hypothesis, indeed, one gains valuable indication for a design process in two steps as it was recently demonstrated also for the temple of Zeus at Olympia. In that way a first simple schema of the column arrangement with equal normal bays and simple angle contraction on all sides were modified by many little variations in the coordination and the dimensioning of the single architectural elements with the aim to realize the building volume in harmonious overall proportions in accordance with the conditions set by the preexisting building phase.
