    Objetivo: analizar la utilidad de los sistemas de atención sanitaria a personas drogodependientes, como instrumento para disminuir la prevalencia del consumo de sustancias en la comunidad. Exponer los criterios mínimos de los que debe disponer un sistema de atención, así como los principales retos futuros del sistema español. Material y métodos: revisión bibliográfica de los criterios expuestos por distintos autores y organismos internacionales, así como de la normativa vigente en España. Conclusiones: la efectividad y la accesibilidad de los sistemas de atención son los factores que, en mayor medida, condicionan el éxito de éstos. La integración de la atención en el sistema sanitario público, la prestación de asistencia al alcoholismo y la adecuación de los agonistas opiáceos a las necesidades actuales, se presentan como tres de los más importantes retos del sistema español en un futuro a corto plazo.

    Objective: to analyze the usefulness of the assistance systems to drug abusers, as instrument to reduce the prevalence of the substances consumption in the community. To expose the minimal criteria of those which must have an assistance system, as well as the principal challenges future of the Spanish system. Material and methods: bibliographical review of the criteria exposed by different authors and international organizations, as well as of the outstanding regulation in Spain. Conclusions: the efficiency and the accessibility of the attention systems are the factors that, in greater measured, conditioned the success of these. The integration of the attention in the public sanitary system, the assistance presentation to the alcoholism and the appropriateness use of the opiate agonists to the current needs, are presented as three of the most important challenges of the Spanish system in a short term future.
