    A pesar de que en la última década del siglo de las Luces las hogueras ya habían dejado de arder, la opinión anti-inquisitorial fue in crescendo en el seno de la Ilustración española desde 1790 hasta su definitiva abolición en 1834 tras la muerte de Fernando VII. Fue muy significativa la temprana participación de Meléndez Valdés, arquetipo de la Ilustración, con su Oda al Fanatismo, en esa corriente de censura y oposición críticas del Santo Oficio, afanado en la persecución de las publicaciones impías y malévolas, prohibidas, y en el control de las aduanas. La Inquisición era tenida como un grave estorbo oscurantista e intolerante que impedía la libre difusión de las Luces.

    Despite the fact that in the last decade of the century of Enlightenment the bonfires had stopped burning, the anti-inquisitorial opinion was in crescendo within the Spanish Enlightenment from 1790 until its definitive abolition after the death of Fernando VII in 1833. It was very significant the early participation of Meléndez Valdés, paradigm of the Enlightenment, with his Ode to Fanaticism, in that current of critical censorship and opposition of the Holy Office, endeavoured in the persecution of impious and malevolent publications, prohibited, and in the Customs control of the borders. The Inquisition was considered a serious obscurantist and intolerant impediment that prevented the free diffusion of the Lights.
