En la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII, se da la casualidad, de encontrarnos con dos personas que en distintas fechas desempeñaron cargos municipales en Almendralejo y que compartían el mismo apellido, “Meléndez”. Este hecho nos llevó a pensar que se trataba de la misma familia del poeta de Ribera, pero no ha sido así, se trata de dos personas distintas y que nada tienen que ver entre sí, salvo que los dos vivieron y trabajaron en Almendralejo. D. Juan Antonio Meléndez (1756?-1767), padre de Juan Meléndez Valdés y el licenciado Juan Meléndez de Valdés, Alcalde Mayor de Almendralejo (1785- 1790).

During the second half of the 18th Century, we find two figures who, at different times, occupied public offices in the city of Almendralejo, and had a last name in common: Meléndez. This coincidence has made us think that both were members of the family of the poet from Ribera, nothing further from the truth. They are entirely unrelated, and their only common bond is that they lived and worked in Almendralejo: Don Juan Antonio Meléndez, father of the poet Juan Meléndez Valdés, from 1756 to 1767, and Don Juan Meléndez de Valdés, mayor of Almendralejo, from 1785 to 1790.
