    A comienzos del siglo XVlll España empezó una profunda reorganización de su Administración en la que se puso patente la falta de una Cartografía adecuada a la explotación racional del territorio. A lo largo del siglo, hubo algunas iniciativas para suplir esta falta, a cargo, casi siempre, de esfuerzos individuales, y se tuvo que esperar, hasta el siglo siguiente para que, otros intentos, esta vez más corporativos, fructificasen finalmente, en la creación del Instituto Geográfi co. La Real Sociedad Geográfica, creada a iniciativa de uno de los mejores cartógrafos del siglo XIX, rinde homenaje a los que, desde 1700, se esforzaron en conseguir una representación fidedigna del territorio nacional.

    At the beginning of the 18th century, Spain started a profound reorganization of its Administration in which the lack of adequate cartography to the rational exploitation of the territory was made clear. Throughout the century, there were some initiatives to supply this shortage; which were always in charge of individual efforts, and one had to wait until the following century so that other attempts, this time more corporate, could finally yield results in the creation of the Geographic Institute. The Royal Geographic Society, created at the initiative of one of the best cartographers of the 19th century, paid tribute to those who, from 1700, struggled to obtain an accurate representation of the national territory
