Montserrat Llonch

  • The study explores the role ofentrepreneursandentrepreneurshipin the creation ofcross borderbusiness, through the figure of theimmigrant entrepreneur. It examines how the relationshipbetweenimmigrant entrepreneursand local managementimpingedknowledge spillovers in the target economyduring the interwar period. Based on ahistorical study of the Lyon Barcelona company(1933-81), the dynamic analysis provides evidence of the creation ofknowledge spillovers. Indeed, theintroduction ofserigraphyby the company led to the creation of acluster specialised in the manufacture of printing moulds in the Catalan town ofPremiade Mar (Barcelona). The effects of thespillover were triggered as technology transfer was absorbed to create new knowledgethat was initially transmitted from the factory itself and was disseminated on the basisof entrepreneurship and the creation of new specialised businesses, during a period of expansion of that activity. The astuteness ofimmigrant entrepreneurs for detecting business potential and the execution of that business bylocal managementalong with regional economic proximity benefittedthe greaterimpactofcross border business on thetarget economies.
