  Science is built within language, using language; therefore scientific writing implies showcasing a piece of research. This paper aims to explore the way reference contributes to this representation in abstracts. Abstracts are now considered as both a screening device and an autonomous genre. The goal here is to understand the role played by a referential chain based on such constructions as [this] research, [this] study to anchor the abstract in an intertextual network and to ensure its coherence as an autonomous text. This study analyses 400 PhD abstracts written in English by authors publishing in an English-speaking and a French-speaking context, in anthropology and astrophysics. A contrastive disciplinary and linguistic approach reveals the correlations between the type of referential chain and the epistemological profile of the discipline as well as the variations due to the mastering of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) by writers of different origins. As well as highlighting the disciplinary specificities of this referential anchoring, the results of this study provide insight into the connection between the academic text and its enunciative context.

  La science se construisant dans et par le langage, les écrits scientifiques sont fondés sur la mise en scène d’une recherche. Notre proposition vise à analyser la manière dont l’opération de référence contribue à cette représentation dans l’abstract devenu un texte autonome et un filtre décisif de la communication scientifique. Nous nous attachons à comprendre comment la construction d’une chaîne référentielle, à partir d’expressions telles que [this] research, [this] study, contribue à la fois à l’affichage de ce nouveau statut de l’abstract dans le réseau intertextuel et à sa cohérence interne en tant que texte autonome. Cette étude porte sur 400 abstracts de thèse rédigés en anglais par des locuteurs anglophones et francophones en anthropologie et en astrophysique. Une double approche, disciplinaire et linguistique, au niveau du corpus et au niveau du texte, permet une meilleure compréhension des liens entre modes de construction de la chaîne référentielle et caractéristiques épistémologiques de la discipline, ainsi que des variations liées au maniement de la langue scientifique par des locuteurs d’origines linguistiques différentes. Au-delà de la mise en évidence des spécificités disciplinaires de la construction de cet ancrage, les résultats de cette étude illustrent la manière dont s’établit le lien entre le texte scientifique et son contexte d’énonciation.
