El arabesco y otros orientalismos en la música de Debussy

    El arabesco y otros rasgos orientales presentes en la música de Debussy se suelen atribuir, en buena medida, a la influencia de la música javanesa que el compositor pudo escuchar en la Exposición Universal parisina de 1889. Otras posibles influencias proceden de la poesía simbolista del momento, sobre todo, la de Mallarmé, y del gusto del arte finisecular por la huida, frente a la realidad burguesa, a entornos exóticos, como el de Antigüedad grecolatina. Sin embargo, en la música de Debussy –cuya desaparición se conmemorará en 2018–, el poso de la obra Chopin representa también una pieza fundamental: buena parte de los rasgos orientales de la música debussiana pueden encontrarse ya en las obras de Chopin durante la primera mitad del siglo XIX.

    The arabesque and other oriental features present in the music of Debussy are often attributed, to a large extent, to the influence of Javanese music that the composer could hear at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1889. Other possible influences come from the symbolist poetry of the moment, above all, Mallarmé´s and from the taste of the turn of the century art for the flight, in the presence of the bourgeois reality, to exotic environments, like the Greco-Roman antiquity. However, in the music of Debussy, whose disappearance will be commemorated in 2018, the basis of the work of Chopin also represents a fundamental piece: a good part of the oriental features of the debussian music can already be found in the works of Chopin during the first half of the 19th century.
