    Este artigo pretende analisar, ainda que de forma exploratória, o fenómeno da violência em idosos e situar as medidas de política de combate à violência em países europeus. A partir de uma revisão bibliográfica, consideram-se os contributos de várias abordagens teóricas da violência sobre os idosos e situa-se o enquadramento da violência em vários países. Identificam-se os factores de risco e os fatores protetores do risco da violência sobre os idosos e reflete-se sobre o modo como as orientações de políticas centradas no envelhecimento activo podem prevenir e proteger as pessoas idosas dos abusos e maus-tratos no domicílio, nas instituições e na comunidade.

    This article aims to analyze the relationship between active aging and violence against the elderly. It approaches the meanings of violence on the elderly and how the concept of active aging integrates them. Based on a literature review we consider the contributions of various theoretical approaches of violence on the elderly, we analyze the framework of violence in several European countries, including Portugal. Finally it identifies the risk factors and protective factors to enhance the active aging in this area, and it reflects on how the policy guidelines focused on active aging can prevent and protect older people from abuse and ill tracts at home, in institutions and the community.
