  • The article presents an altarpiece with "The Virgin appearing to Saint Giacinto Odrovaz" in the church of Saint Domenico in Molfetta, known by local scholars but overlooked by historians of seventeenth-century painting in Puglia. The commission of the work may be traced to the city's bishop, Giacinto Petroni, and archival documentation reveals that it was carried out very soon after 1638. Ruling out the authorship of Andrea Vacaro transmitted by local historical tradition, the author uses convincing stylistic comparisons to put forward an attribution to the Master of Christ Among the Doctors, a Neapolitan painter in the circle of Ribera.
