We want to encourage the development of behavior analytic research in numerical cognition area, involving research on pre-mathematical (innate) and mathematical behavior, both with important implications for mathematics education. Our general focus relies on number sense which research and knowledge have the following benefits: the possibility of early identification of people who may have difficulties in learning mathematics; the identification of efficient teaching procedures to develop basic mathematical skills. Considering number sense studies our main interest is with research about baby’s subitization. We developed a critical introduction to cognitive research on subitization with human babies based on the criteria of originality and membership in one of the two research lines described by Cohen & Marks (2002). The studies select revealed that human babies are sensitive to numerical variations in their environment and that this ability is exclusively innate. Based on these studies, we presented some concepts in behavior analysis that could be used for a preliminary behavioral interpretation of the psychological processes underlying subitization, always pointing out possibilities of new studies and discussing the results of the revised research. We believe that Behavior Analysis has important interpretive contributions to offer based on its theoretical and methodological-experimental features not only help to plan experimental environments that prioritize control of the variables under study, but also help to ask relevant questions that can contribute to replicate the study with babies and interpreting its data. It is suggested that behavior analytical interpretation of perception, research about observation behavior and the stimulus equivalence paradigm can be used as initial possibilities to analyze data obtained in research on subitization. Future articles should promote empirical research on subitization oriented by Experimental Analysis of Behavior.
