Este artículo explica la conformación de las bases del sistema turístico español contemporáneo durante el primer tercio del siglo xx a través de sus cuatro etapas. Y presenta las cifras de la economía del turismo que prueban los avances de este «país de turismo» en esta etapa formativa, que lo sitúan entre los trece primeros países turísticos del mundo iniciada la década de 1930.

This paper explains the consolidation of the contemporary Spanish tourist system during the first third of the twentieth century by dividing the process into four stages. It focuses on relevant statistics of the tourism economy that indicate how this «country of tourism» incorporated important advances in the formative stage. By the beginning of the 1930s, Spain had become one of the thirteen principal tourist countries of the world.
