    Rocío. La devoción mariana de Andalucía, uno de los libros más relevantes de la literatura rociera, fue publicado por Juan Infante Galán en 1971. En él su autor, sirviéndose de fuentes primarias, pretende ofrecer una descripción comprensiva de la devoción a la Virgen del Rocío, desde una perspectiva fundamentalmente histórica, centrada en su relación con el pueblo de Almonte. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar esta obra y situarla en su tiempo y, especialmente, en el contexto de la historiografía rociera. Rocío apareció en un periodo crucial en el que confluyeron múltiples y decisivos cambios en el Rocío y en su entorno social y geoeconómico. Estos cambios darían lugar, entre otras cosas, a un rápido y espectacular aumento de la participación en la Romería, a su masificación. Como consecuencia, también la producción bibliográfica sobre el Rocío crecería considerablemente. El libro de Infante Galán se sitúa en el umbral de ambos procesos. El análisis de su contenido indica, sin embargo, que es un texto muy desigual y ambivalente, en el que queda de manifiesto reiteradamente la personalidad de su autor. Sin duda, es una obra con carencias científicas y otras insuficiencias ostensibles, pero también aporta descripciones interesantes e información novedosa gracias a una documentación poco estudiada hasta entonces, así como algunas ideas e intuiciones muy sugestivas. Constituye, en todo caso, un hito en la literatura rociera: es el primer libro que trató de ofrecer una visión general de la devoción, en los albores del Rocío contemporáneo, lo que la convirtió en obra de referencia durante muchos años.

    Rocío. La devoción mariana de Andalucía, one of the most important books in Rocío literature, was published by Juan Infante Galán in 1971. In this work the author seeks to use primary sources in order to offer a comprehensive description of devotion to the Virgen del Rocío from a deep historical perspective, focused on the relationship of this devotion with the community of Almonte. The objective of this article is to analyze this work situating it in its time and, especially, in the context of the overall historiography of Rocío. Rocío appeared at a crucial period in which multiple and decisive changes converged, both in religious devotion and in its social and geoeconomic environment. These changes would lead, among other things, to a rapid and spectacular increase in participation in the Romería (pilgrimage), its masificación, or burgeoning.Asa consequence, the bibliographic production about Rocío also grew considerably. Rocío, by Infante Galán, stands at the threshold of these very significant processes. An analysis of its content indicates, however, that it is a very uneven and ambivalent book, in which the personality of its author repeatedly reveals itself. While this work is characterized by some scholarly and other striking deficiencies, it also offers interesting descriptions and new information thanks to its use of documentation little studied until then, and thanks also to some suggestive ideas and intuitions. lt constitutes, in any event, a milestone in the literature about Rocío. It is the first book that tries to present a general view of Rocío devotion at the very dawn ofits contemporary expression, which has made it an important reference work for many years.
