    La giocosità espressa dallo sport nei campi di concentramento ha rappresentato solamente una nota, una piccola nota in un concerto di note diverse e ben più soverchianti ed ostili e certamente una nota ampiamente sopraffatta dalle altre. Ma evidenziarla e in certo modo insistervi è un modo per testimoniare che un barlume di vita e di speranza continuava a circolare anche in realtà e condizioni dove a dominare erano la distruzione e la morte.

    Riportare dunque alla luce qualcuno di questi episodi risulta operazione civile e nello stesso tempo assume anche una precisa valenza politica: per migliaia di detenuti, infatti, riuscire ad occuparsi, nel contesto di una tragedia, che fino ad allora non aveva conosciuto uguali, di un qualcosa che poteva procurare, sia pure con tutte le limitazioni del caso, una piccola oasi di piacere, appare un’accorata testimonianza, se non addirittura richiesta, di umanità e di pace.

    Si trattava, in altri termini, di uno dei pochi strumenti, per dirla con Primo Levi, che aiutavano a sperare in una possibilità di salvezza.

    The playfulness of sports in concentration camps has only represented one single aspect, a very small one indeed in a reality plagued by others much more overwhelming and hostile.

    Surely it is just one little aspect that has been largely overpowered by the others. However, outlining and insisting on this tiny aspect evidences that there was actually a flicker of hope alive even under those conditions and circumstances dominated by destruction and death.

    Therefore, throwing some light on any of these episodes is a civic duty and, at the same time, it also bears a certain political value. In fact, for thousands of those arrested, to be able to spend their time doing something that could actually be considered a small oasis of happiness, despite the constraints of the situation and the unprecedented magnitude of this tragedy, seems like an accurate and necessary statement of humanity and peace. In other words, as Primo Levi put it, it was one of the few instruments that helped them to keep hoping for a possibility to be saved.
