The CORDEREGRA or Corpus Diacrónico del Español del Reino de Granada (Diachronic Corpus of Spanish in the Kingdom of Granada) comprises sources of non-literary Spanish in the period 1492-1833. The texts in this corpus belong mainly to three text types: notarial records, letters, and criminal suits. The latter frequently include witness depositions which reproduce their words verbatim or the way that they in turn reproduced the words of others (in direct speech).

Given that research about the pronoun usted has commonly been centred around the sources provided by Spanish classical drama, the present work’s goals are twofold: a) to present empirical evidence of the use of the pronoun in the texts of CORDEREGRA; b) to determine the differences in the evolution of the use of usted between literary and non-literary sources during the XVII and XVIII centuries.
