In the UK, stockpiling the Tamiflu, as the World Health Organization advises, has cost L522 million. Fiona Godlee of the BMJ told a UK parliamentary committee last week that Tamiflu has never been directly compared with paracetamol. Because not all the trials of the drug have been published, she says, there are "serious doubts" about the drug's effectiveness. Jonathan Van-Tam of the University of Nottingham, UK, has no such doubts. At a meeting in Brussels, Belgium, in May, Van-Tam reported that those who received Tamiflu within two days of falling ill were only half as likely to die as those who got it late or not at all.
