  The Late Ordovician (between 458 and 444 million years ago) is characterized by the concomitance of the growth of extensive continental glaciers larger than the Antarctic ice sheet and the second largest mass extinction in Earth's history. Here we aim at using numerical climate models to better constrain the causes and magnitude of the climatic changes that occurred at that time. Through this example, we will illustrate the capacity of climate modeling to shed new light on climate in deep-time periods.

  L'Ordovicien supérieur, entre 458 et 444 millions d'années avant l'actuel, est caractérisé par la concomitance de l'apparition de grands glaciers continentaux plus étendus que l'Antarctique et de la deuxième plus grande extinction de masse qu'a connu la vie sur Terre. L'objectif est ici d'utiliser des modèles numériques de climat pour mieux comprendre les causes et modalités des changements climatiques qui ont eu lieu à cette époque. À travers cet exemple, nous illustrons la capacité de la modélisation climatique à améliorer notre compréhension des climats lointains, voire très lointains.
