    • Open badges are portable, digital credentials that offer the opportunity to reward learning in both formal and informal settings, providing an inventory of competencies and interests. Previously, a comprehensive framework of open badges in the ‘Working Scientifically’ strand of the National Curriculum in England (ages 5–16), extending into post-16 study of science, has been described.

      Here the case for both teaching manipulative and procedural competencies and how to do so is demonstrated. The trial implements the open badge framework and strategies in an informal setting.

      Evidence from film recordings made during the trial suggests that this strategy can be used successfully to motivate and engage young people, to develop fundamental practical skills and to introduce and reinforce key scientific vocabulary in a more overt manner than is currently used in school education.
