Los primeros cincuenta años del Hospital General de Mallorca: desde la fundación hasta la promulgación de las Ordenaciones (1456-1514)

    El presente artículo analiza el período inicial del establecimiento del Hospital General de Mallorca, desde su fundación en 1456 hasta la promulgación de las Ordenaciones en 1514. Para ello, se usan algunas fuentes que, a pesar de ser conocidas, no han sido utilizadas de forma sistemática en las investigaciones precedentes, aunque también se aportan algunos documentos inéditos. El Hospital General de Mallorca fue el resultado de la fusión de los pequeños centros preexistentes. Este procedimiento no era nuevo, sino que se venía practicando en la Corona de Aragón desde la creación del Hospital de la Santa Cruz de Barcelona en 1401. Las autoridades municipales se hicieron con el control de la institución, mientras la Iglesia quedaba relegada de las funciones administrativas. Durante sus primeros años, el Hospital General tuvo que buscar las fuentes de financiación necesarias para ejercer sus funciones hospitalarias y construir un edificio adecuado para atender enfermos y niños expósitos. Las Ordenaciones de 1514 supusieron que la institución se dotase de su primer reglamento. En definitiva, la fundación del Hospital General de Mallorca se tiene que enmarcar en los procesos de unificación de hospitales y de laicización de la asistencia, característicos de los años centrales del siglo XV.

    This paper analyses the initial period of the establishing of the General Hospital of Majorca, from its founding in 1456 until the promulgation of its ordinances in 1514. To reach this purpose, the paper uses some sources that have not been worked systematically by the previous researches, although they are known, but we also provide some unpublished documents. The General Hospital of Majorca was the result of the union of the pre-existing small hospitals. This procedure was not new, but it was used in the Crown of Aragon from the founding of the Hospital of the Saint Cross of Barcelona in 1401. The municipal authorities seize the control of the hospital institution, while the Church had a secondary role in the administrative functions. During its first years, the General Hospital must seek to necessary sources of income to exercise its hospital functions and construct an appropriate building to attend to poor people and foundling children. The Ordinances of 1514 supposed that the institution provided itself with its first regulation. Therefore, the founding of the General Hospital of Majorca has to be framed in the process of unification of hospitals and of laicization of the assistance, both characteristic of the mid-fifteenth century.
