  En el presente trabajo se presenta una revisión bibliográfica acerca de las intersecciones entre el arte y el padecimiento mental. En primera instancia se define la concepción de salud mental y padecimientos mentales discapacitantes, desde una perspectiva que tiene en cuenta las funciones y habilidades de los sujetos, más allá de pensar la discapacidad en términos de deficiencias. Partiendo de estos conceptos se realiza un recorrido histórico acerca de las prácticas y concepciones que han primado a lo largo del tiempo en la relación entre el arte y el campo de la salud mental. Se pueden establecer cuatro etapas históricas. Estas se caracterizan en un primer momento por una idea romántica del “genio loco” y en un segundo momento por el surgimiento del arteterapia como técnica. Un tercer momento histórico se distingue por la utilización del arte en el movimiento antipsiquiatrico y los últimos años se caracterizan por un creciente estudio sistemático en el área y dos marcadas tendencias. Actualmente las prácticas artísticas en el campo de la salud mental se definen con finalidades psicoterapéuticas o como prácticas sociales que puede tener incidencia en el mejoramiento de la salud de las personas que participan en ellas.

  This paper is a literature review about the intersections between art and mental suffering . In the first instance defined the conception of mental health and disabling mental suffering from a perspective that takes into account the roles and abilities of subjects, beyond thinking in terms of disability deficiencies. Based on these concepts is performed a historical journey about practices and concepts that have primacy over time in the relationship between art and the field of mental health. It can set four historical stages. These are characterized at first by a romantic idea of the "mad genius" and in a second time by the emergence of art therapy as a technique. A third historical moment is distinguished by the use of art in the anti-psychiatry movement. In recent years is characterized by a growing systematic study in the area and two strong trends. Currently the artistic practices in the field of mental health are defined with psychotherapeutic purposes or as social practices that may have an impact on improving the health of people who participate in them.
