You might have thought it would be hard to write much on what must be one of the simplest of structural elements.
However, the Technical Guidance Note, together with these comments, suggests otherwise. As always, there are complications. Strictly speaking, the BS 5977 clause relates to the wall itself rather than the lintel or its bearing, but is a consideration nonetheless. The wisdom of ‘structural frames’ can be questioned:
what happens when someone later changes them? And the last sentence is a reminder to all designers to be aware of the age-old problem of water in external walls.
