Assessment medication adherence and its associated factors among hypertensive patients at Ras Desta Damtew Memorial Hospital

    • Background. Hypertension is an overwhelming global challenge with high morbidity and mortality rate. Poor adherence is associated with bad outcome of the disease and wastage of health care resources. Although the issue is cross cutting, little research were under taken in Ethiopia so that the current study is aimed to assess medication adherence and its associated factors among hypertensive patients at Ras Desta Damtew Memorial Hospital (RDDMH). Method. An institution based cross-sectional study was conducted, from March-April 2018, among hypertensive patients. Univariate analysis was done to determine the frequency and percentage of variables. Bivariate analysis was done to identify factors for non-adherence. Result. A total of 356 patients were interviewed. The analysis of the survey data showed that 166 (46.6%) and 190 (53.4%) of respondents were male and female patients, respectively. The overall prevalence of non-adherence is 39.6%. Conclusion. The prevalence of non-adherence among hypertensive patients is 39.6%. Factors associated with non-adherence include age, taking alcohol, presence of other chronic disease, knowing the consequences of interruption of drugs and getting counseling services regularly
