  • Starting from the nineteenth century, significant changes were made to the cities; during that time the directions of development for the transformations of the twentieth century were defined. In the most important cities the modernization plans also correspond to the proposition of ideal and romantic values that are implemented with the construction of public buildings and infrastructures, sometimes through interventions of spatial and formal reconfiguration, other times with new constructions. The architectural language assumes an important ideological role that is often in continuity with the past, the classical one or the medieval one. Even in the architectural production considered minor and provincial, it is possible to discover territories permeated by the schools of thought developed in the same years in Europe and in the most important centers. Through the activity and production of Salvatore Gravanti (1785-1867), a not well-known figure in the Sicilian architectural scene of the first half of the nineteenth century, active in Sciacca and Agrigento, the linguistic variables of the revival culture are highlighted, above all of neo-gothic origin, which presents references both to the Sicilian historical architecture and to the forms of the international Gothic. The essay offers a reading of Gravanti’s work in the cultural context of the time and in relation to the events and transformations of the cities in which he operated.
