  • Resumen
    • The famous architect Jacques-Ignace Hittorff legitimized his choices in the use of colors in his architectural works trough the results of the archaeological excavations carried out in Sicily between 1823 and 1824. The main subject of this article is precisely a selection of the polychrome samples found in Selinunte, which Hittorff brought with him to Paris, never reproduced in color until today, and never compared with his surveys, nor with his Parisian architectural achievements. Hittorff was intent on developing his own methodology to find answers to his questions, based on archaeological evidences. He did not intend to found an educational collection for a school or a scientific institution, instead he wanted to create a collection for himself, to be hosted in his private house. Moreover the "team" composed of Hittorff, Zanth and Stier, after having carried out numerous surveying campaigns on the sites of Sicily, returned to Rome to complete works and drawings on the documentation collected on the island. These drawings, presented in exhibitions open to the public, show the results of their research on archaeological sites and constitute a sort of compendium on the polychromy in classical Greek architecture.
