  • The recent and exceptional attempts of Gruneau and Hargreaves to develop a radical theory of sport are evaluated. The considerable advances they make to appropriate sport as a cultural formation are offset against the need to integrate consideration of gender, leisure, and the institutional conservatism of sport into the analysis.
